The Hope Project

Never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.  – Margaret Mead

In 2008, two former patients and their families approached the Health Sciences Centre Foundation with a dream of refurbishing GD6, the Acute Leukemia/Blood & Marrow Transplant/Oncology unit at HSC. Patients on this unit are highly susceptible to infection, and therefore must remain on the unit for a month at a time, and sometimes even longer.  The care, the people had been extraordinary, but the unit was badly in need of refurbishment.

The Hope Project was born.

Together we put out the call, and Manitoba responded. An awareness day on CBC Radio & Television got the Project off to a great start. Golf tournaments, poker tournaments and a 5k walk/run raised thousands more. And letters and calls poured in to the Foundation office from other former patients who wanted to help.

Over $300,000 was raised, and GD6 is now a warm, comfortable place in which to heal.

Thank you!
