John Buhler Research Centre
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the HSC Foundation owns the top two floors of the John Buhler Research Centre. Today, these floors are filled to capacity, home to researchers, specialists and cutting edge equipment that are improving health care for Manitobans now and into the future, including:

- the Great-West Life PET/CT Centre, home to one of the most advanced, non-invasive imaging technologies available in North America. The PET/CT can detect diseases weeks or months before symptoms appear and monitor on-going treatment, helping oncologists and other specialists improve outcomes and quality of life
- Dr. John Wilkins and the Manitoba Centre for Proteomics, which conducts world-class research on proteins in living organisms, helping scientists to quickly identify potential treatments. Dr. Wilkins, who was one of the lead members of a group critical to understanding the SARS virus, was recruited to HSC because of the lab
- Hepatologist Dr. Gerry Minuk and his research team, whose discoveries have been instrumental in the development of a new approach to the treatment of liver cancer worldwide. Their outstanding work has established HSC’s Section of Hepatology as a global centre of excellence
- Leading gastroenterologist Dr. Charles Bernstein, founder of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Clinical & Research Centre. The centre has received international recognition for its research, and is home to the largest IBD database in North America. This database has allowed Dr. Bernstein to conduct some of the most thorough and impactful population studies in the world
- Nationally-recognized neurochemist and psychiatrist Dr. Xin-Min Li and his team, who are about to move into their brand new lab on the 7th floor. Dr. Li’s work – investigating the chemical basis for certain psychiatric conditions – effectively brings a whole new research group to HSC and gives hope for improved treatment of these conditions
