Chair, Doris Bear, Aboriginal Mental Health

Doris Bear

Over the last number of decades, there has been an expanding concern across the world regarding high and rising rates of mental health, addictions and suicide among Aboriginal peoples. Several high profile reports have been released driving increased awareness and focusing the urgent need for research, programs and interventions among Aboriginal populations.

During the last ten years, Health Sciences Centre has recruited leading internationally recognized researchers in traumatic stress, Aboriginal mental health, depression and anxiety. We are now ready for the next step.  The creation of an Endowed Chair in Aboriginal Mental Health places Manitoba at the forefront of Aboriginal mental health research and treatment that will impact prevention and treatment programs globally.

THE NEED TO LEARN MORE

Although Aboriginal mental health problems are often linked to loss of culture, colonization, exposure to poverty and significant traumatic events, the truth is that suicide is a very complex problem whose determinants are unknown.  There is a need to have a more thorough culturally-grounded understanding of mental health problems among Aboriginal people in Manitoba.  Working with Aboriginal communities to develop effective, culturally-grounded suicide prevention strategies is imperative.

The Health Sciences Center Foundation is committing to raise $3 million to create an Endowed Chair in Aboriginal Mental Health that will cement Manitoba’s reputation as a global leader in the advancement of Aboriginal mental health research.

If you choose to Donate, your contribution will help fund groundbreaking research and will be associated with global leadership in finding effective community-based prevention strategies for mental health problems, addictions and suicide.
