HSC Foundation Awards More Than $347,000 in Research Grants

Posted: November 17, 2017

November 17, 2017—WINNIPEG—This year, the Health Sciences Centre Foundation is providing researchers with more than $347,000 in grants, helping fund ten projects at HSC Winnipeg: Manitoba’s flagship hospital. These grants are one way HSC Foundation donors help enhance patient care in Manitoba.

"The HSC Foundation is proud to support these projects that have the potential to transform patient care in Manitoba and beyond,” says Jonathon Lyon, President and CEO of the HSC Foundation. "These initiatives will enhance the knowledge of our medical teams, and could one day lead to better diagnoses and treatment methods. Thank you to our donors, who make this research possible”

Each application was reviewed by experts in their respective fields at HSC Winnipeg. There were four different competitions:
  • General Operating Grant Competition
  • Allied Health Grant Competition
  • Dolly & Michael Gembey Nursing Research Award & Grant Competition
  • Mindel & Tom Olenick Research Award in Immunology Competition

"This year’s projects focus on many key areas of care at HSC, including mental health, rehabilitation, chronic pain, inflammatory diseases, diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders such as epilepsy and multiple sclerosis,” says Paul Wiebe, Director of Research Administration at HSC Winnipeg. "It is incredibly important for Manitobans that we invest in innovative medical research, because it strengthens our understanding and application of patient care in several areas.”

Since 1981, HSC Foundation donors have supported more than 400 research projects, equipping hundreds of researchers with over 55,000-sqaure-feet of dedicated research space filled with cutting-edge technology and equipment. Supporting local and new research helps foster a strong research community in Manitoba, and is key to improving care for patients and their loved ones.
