Our Needs - Thoracic Endoscopy Unit

New Initiative: Thoracic Endoscopy Unit at HSC

Look Deep Inside to Help Us Look Deep Inside

You can:
  • help HSC detect lung and esophageal cancer earlier;
  • help HSC keep up with the growing diagnostic demands of an aging population;
  • shorten wait times for patients waiting for biopsy results;
  • help patients avoid unnecessary invasive surgery; and
  • help patients get faster treatment.

Your gift will save lives.

What is the need?

The numbers are alarming. In June 2017, the Canadian Cancer Society reported that nearly one in two Canadians will be diagnosed with a form of cancer in their lifetime. In 2017, over 206,000 Canadians will be diagnosed, and nearly 81,000 will die.

At HSC, we see startling numbers as well. With lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer deaths, we see up to 30 new patients a week. We see one or two esophageal cancer patients every week. In the 1970s, that number was one or two esophageal cancer patients per month.

We know that early detection and early treatment are essential. We also know that as the population ages, cancer rates will continue to rise. Keeping pace with the diagnostic demands is a high priority for HSC.

How will the new Thoracic Endoscopy Unit make a difference?

The proposed Thoracic Endoscopy Unit is one major initiative that will help address the challenge. "Thoracic endoscopy” is a diagnostic procedure to look at the chest and digestive tract (excluding the heart). It is the primary way of discovering lung and esophageal cancer – both especially aggressive and dangerous forms of the disease. With the number of cancer patients growing, HSC needs to increase its capacity to help these patients.

The new unit will help diagnose more patients, more quickly, and more accurately. It will allow for more procedures and treatments. In some cases, surgery can be avoided. The goal is to get to a place where patients can be scoped, diagnosed, and even receive a first treatment on the very same day.

With your generous contribution to the HSC Foundation, we will achieve that goal

Purchasing, installing, and staffing the new Thoracic Endoscopy Unit is a multi-million dollar undertaking. It’s an investment that will improve efficiency at HSC Winnipeg and, more important, it’s an investment that will save lives.
