Making Advanced Medicine a Reality

The Kleysen Institute for Advanced Medicine will be home to the Centre for Surgical Innovation which will encompass the entire second floor of the Institute. This 20,000- square-foot Institute is where young surgeons will train and new surgical techniques will be developed.
When Wilf Taillieu looks at the buzz of construction activity occurring at the Kleysen Institute for Advanced Medicine, he feels a sense of pride, knowing that he helped to make this project a reality.
“It feels good to be a part of this fantastic building, even if it is a small part,” he said. “The technology being installed in this building is so impressive, it’s like something out of StarTrek,” laughed Wilf. “I knew I had to be a part of such a grand project.”
The Centre for Surgical Innovation will feature 4 surgical research theatres, complete with Canada’s first intra-operative MRI – developed right here in Winnipeg by IMRIS and the National Research Council. The MRI will be located in the middle of the Centre and swing out on tracks between three rooms. This cutting-edge technology will allow surgeons to complete MR imaging on a patient during surgery, without needing to transport the patient outside the operating room.
Surgeons will have the opportunity to look at what is happening inside the patient before the surgery is complete, the MRI can eliminate the need for patients to undergo multiple rounds of anesthetic and surgery. Less rounds of surgery mean great things for patients, including a quicker recovery.
After sitting down with the HSC Foundation, he learned that government funds go directly to patient care, while the HSC Foundation funds the research and tools that enhance it, such as state of the art diagnostics and clinical equipment.
“Now that I know what will be happening in this building, I really hope I never have to make use of any of this technology but if I ever do, I’m happy to know it will be available here.”
